You or your loved one being diagnosed with a terminal illness is never easy. Patients nearing the end of their life need compassionate care and services that treat their physical and emotional needs.
Hospice and palliative care focus on keeping patients comfortable during the last phase of their lives and treating them with dignity. Continuum Care of King, Continuum Care of Snohomish and Continuum Care of Pierce offers patients nursing care, medical management, and spiritual services as part of our palliative and hospice services.
What is Hospice Care?
Hospice Care focuses on treating the person and their symptoms rather than treating a disease or illness. Your loved one will enter hospice care when they decide to stop seeking aggressive treatment for a terminal illness. A hospice team including physicians and nurses will help your loved one and the family develop a care plan designed with their specific needs in mind.
Continuum Care of King, Continuum Care of Snohomish and Continuum Care of Pierce’s hospice services include:
- Skilled nursing care
Nurses and home health aides will make regular in-home visits to provide nursing care and evaluate the patient’s condition. Staff is always on call and can make emergency visits if needed.
- Management of medications
Medical staff will administer medications to relieve pain and manage any other symptoms the patient is experiencing.
- Medical equipment and supplies
Hospice services provide all medical equipment needed. This includes hospital beds, mobility assistance devices, and other equipment needed to treat or comfort the patient.
- Emotional and spiritual support
Our hospice team also provides special personalized services to support the patient’s wellbeing and spiritual needs at the end of their life. We’ll bring in certified therapists to administer massage or reiki therapy and also offer music therapy to our patients.
Hospice care is also provided at select skilled nursing facilities, where the nursing staff cares for your loved one around the clock. The same physical and emotional care services as they would receive at home are provided at the facility. Choosing between at-home and in-residence care is up to the patient and their family. You should make the decision based on your family’s needs and care plan.
Palliative Care Services
Unlike hospice care, palliative care isn’t just for patients facing life-limiting illnesses or injuries. Palliative care can be administered throughout your treatment and during any stage of injury or illness. The goal of palliative care is to ease the side effects caused by your treatment and help with pain management. It also provides patients with emotional support during their treatment.
